SKN Electrical Limited is a company that provides Electrical Contractors to the Offshore Oil Industry. They use a database application to manage the work in conjunction with specialist zone 1 approved hand-held computers to collect the data on site.
The working environment is challenging for the engineers and also for the technology they use. Working practices can include back-to-back teams operating 24×7 across 3-week cycles so the application is in continuous use. Product support was only available during office hours, incidents that interrupted work were frequent and problem resolution was too long.
When the engineers could not rely on the application, they had to revert to manual data collection. If that continued for a long time the data entry task became more difficult and error prone. Some of the problems were also causing data uploads to take a huge amount of time that reduced productivity significantly.
